Novels # 16: The Catcher in the Rye

The Catcher in the Rye ( "The Catcher in the Rye" ), is one of the most celebrated novels of training world, perhaps the most famous one, written in 1951 by Jerome David Salinger, better known as JD Salinger (1919-2010), author shy, unapproachable, infotografabile, inintervistabile (a couple of interviews in fifty years and only one official photos).
Beyond the character of the author, who retired from public life and career in 1965, "Holden" text is read and reread by those who love writing (and who wants to be a writer). The plot sees the center of the seventeen year old Holden Caulfield, student-model, four schools and changed a little brother who died of leukemia. The boy runs away from Pencey college in Pennsylvania and runs to New York City.
And here starts the adventure.
Alberghetti disreputable, girls, prostitutes, professors, disturbances, drunkenness, emotions, melancholy ... and New York. So yes, a lot of exciting and New York. Edmont Hotel, the Zoo, the Central Park lake with its ducks in winter, the clock of the Biltmore Hotel, museums around Central Park.
and lesser known places, like the neighborhood where he lives Professor Antolini: "They were very chic in that apartment on Sutton Place, with a living room that you go down two steps and the bar and everything."
The Salinger of New York is real and unreal at the same time, a place no-place wanted the main character, reached with the body but the soul still wandering: "I went back to the hotel on foot. Forty beautiful island . It's not that I want to walk. It is rather that I had no desire to restart all the ups and downs by taxi.
This New York has so impressed on the imagination and the criticism that The New York Times has drawn up a special map for the benefit of every tourist literature .
The city symbol of the city is an integral part of the novel and it also binds to non-narrative events (December 8, 1980, a copy of the novel was in the pocket of Mike Chapman, the man who shot John Lennon in his home in New York).

Life and works of the canon Giovanni Spano

Successivamente, at the seminary of Trent, earned the title of Magister Artium liberalium and, in 1825, a doctorate in theology. He learned Italian, Latin, greek, Hebrew, Chaldean, Arabic and all the dialects of Sardinia.

In 1827 he was ordained priest in 1831 and moved to Rome. Here he cultivated his studies of antiquity, of Sacred Scripture and Oriental Languages, and came into contact with some eminent masters.

In 1834 he was appointed professor of Sacred Scripture and Oriental Languages \u200b\u200bat the University of Cagliari. Established, at once, good relations with leading intellectuals of the time, began to follow, books and frequent travel in the territory, the two strands that most attracted him: the language and archeology of Sardinia. In 1835 he began, in fact, his archaeological explorations in the island, but the need to compare his observations with other scholars urged him to make a long trip in various Italian cities. In 1836 he returned to Sardinia, started the first excavations in some sites and addresses the problem of the antiquity of the nuraghi. At the same time continued his studies on the Sardinian language. In 1839 he was appointed director of the Library of the University of Cagliari, which renewed the law. Accused by the Magistrate of the studies, to neglect the teaching of Sacred Scripture to concentrate on language sardines, and poetry, he was reduced salary. It was therefore compelled, in 1842, leaving the direction of the library. But his appointment as canon, and the allocation of the prebend of Villaspeciosa, allowed him to break free from financial worries and concentrate on his studies.

was in constant contact with scholars from all over Europe, with a close match witnessed by some 2500 letters, now housed in the University Library of Cagliari. He began to dig at various locations, including Nora, Ploaghe Lanusei and simultaneously followed his studies in the field of language, beginning with the preparation of his Dictionary. With the "perfect blend" had difficulty keeping his prebend, but nevertheless continued his scientific work and in the excavations in different parts of Sardinia, acquiring an international reputation. In 1854 he was called to preside at the boarding school and the College of Santa Teresa and founded the "Sardinian Archaeological bulletin" in 1857 became rector of the university. Active, in 1860 he set up in Cagliari, Faculty of Letters, but it was closed soon after for lack of students in the same year gave impetus to the "Archaeological bulletin", which appeared until 1865, with the collaboration of internationally renowned scholars, and also collected a significant number of its publications. Ceased his duties as rector in 1868, continued to take care of his studies, giving rise to periodico "Scoperte archeologiche", che pubblicò fino al 1876.

John Spano deserves to be remembered not only for having revealed the origins and reasons for the nation's cultural Sardinia, but also for the iron will to read up, to deepen the disciplines in which precursor was beyond the confines of his island and for helping to catch the historic Sardinia.

In the spring of 1877 manifested the serious health problems that April 3, 1878 led to his death.

The tomb named after Canon John Spano is situated within the monumental cemetery of Bonaria, on the north side. The reuses a tomb found Roman had the same scholar. Designed by Canon nine years before his death, as stated by one of the inscriptions on the front ("Iohannes Spanus Vivus fecit sibi MDCCCLXIX ... ') is composed of a Roman sarcophagus supported by four columns and surmounted by a marble bust of the deceased attributed to Giuseppe Sartorio.

Treasure of Morgantina

The Metropolitan Museum in New York has recently returned to our country, the so-called "Treasure of Morgantina", consisting of sixteen silver objects dating from the third century BC

Morgantina is an archaeological site on the outskirts of the village of Aidone in the province of Enna. Was based in south-eastern Sicily from the people of Morgeti, who was eventually absorbed by the Greeks, and among the fourth and third centuries BC, fell into the orbit of the powerful city of Syracuse. As evidence of this, the treasure of silver was forged under the rule of the tyrant Hieron II of Syracuse (275-215 BC). His last owner was Eupolemo, whose name is still imprinted on one of the finds. These are objects ", table", as the foot-shaped cups with theatrical masks to mix wine with water, the pitcher and attingitoio, and the other four cups for drinking cup with two handles, and other with votive artifacts and sacred function.

Elections. Denied the right to vote: the farce of the reductions railway

"It's not the convention-Trenitalia Ministry"

"the rant of a worker"

Filmed by:
Mezziogiorno.net the newspaper of Naples and Caserta
GP) . Unbelievable what happened to a worker in the elections on April 28 and 29 wanted to get to the place of residence by moving from where you work in Northern Italy. Here is his testimony.
"I have regularly bought a train ticket to go to the polls.
In effetti the procedure adopted by Trenitalia, if someone as they say in "losing its way" and not just during the 'election trip,' cause for more than a suspicion. On the one hand you required to do just the ticket for that type of train, the other if you lose, you stick to the tram, as in the case of our travelers.
If you miss the train, the traveler to have a minimum refund is still forced to reach a station within 60 minutes, where the ticket could be closed. Before you made the note that had lasted several months, without a seat reservation required, it was was much more flexible. Now you forced to make a reservation and even somersaults. E ' a real vexation to the passenger. Rather than think of the comfort of the various Red Arrow, Trenitalia might think to make your trip more comfortable since the first climb on the train.
